Redesigning Radius BZ1 is a sponsored project by Industrial Scientific Corporation focusing on their gas monitoring devices

ISC’s current devices are amongst the top of the market, but lack consideration of comfort and visual brand. I’m proposing a compact and modular vision to address this.

My Role: The Current Radius BZ1

Industrial Scientific’s Area Monitor that tracks gas contents and warns nearby workers of dangerous levels using bright LEDs and a loud alarm.

I was tasked to redesign the Radius BZ1 to improve usability and maintain a cohesive brand language.

Observed Painpoints

01 Inefficient Storage
Large footprint + cone design takes up uneccessary space in storage
02 Uncomfortable Access
Low height causes the need to crouch for key touchpoints
03 Transport Damage

Exposed components get damaged the most during transport

Proposal
A new Radius BZ1 highlighting a hexagonal profile for compact storage, and extendable shell for increased height and ruggedness

01

Optimized Storage

Leverage a hexagonal profile to maximize storage space

02

Adaptable Use

Dual-state design: compact size for portability, and extended height for easy touchpoints access

03

Integrated Features

Incorporated LED strips along rim to signal gas level status

04

Improved Screen Interface

Moved screen location for easier viewing and updated UI design to prioritize key information

01

Research

Visiting Industrial Scientific to get hands-on and learn from  engineers and user researchers about common complaints and weak points in design

Product Breakdown
How is the current Radius BZ1 made and what is the typical user journey

02

Form Inspirations

Compact and approachable for comfortable transportation

Ideation
Sketches and quick foam models

01 AccordianExtendable rubber center to add height when deployed, collapsed for transport
02 Case Carry-bag profile that can be mounted flat or flipped wider for ground deployment
03 Cart Wheeled base with handle for pulling around, extendable center for increase height

Chosen Concept: Interlock
Mirrored locking form with 2 modes (compact and extended), for transportation and deployment

03

Interim Review with ISC
Mid-project presentation with engineers and researchers from Industrial Scientific to validate our design proposals

04

Form Refinement

Sketching out trim details, bumpers, and part/color breaks
Maintaining Industrial Scientific’s brand language

Solidworks Refinement

Focusing on refining details and proportions

Creating a working rotation mechanism

3D-printed parts for assembly Testing functionality and fit with 1/3 scale model before commiting to a full-scale print

Final Model for Industrial Scientific
Model is filled, sanded, and spray painted
Assembled with screws
